Bicycle Rebuild

I started rebuilding the Trek 1100 on Monday at the Pedals to People shop.

I have to admit that I was a bit worried about what to do.  I’ve never gotten too deep into bicycle repair so this is a pretty big step for me.

Upon arrival, Mike said that the first thing to do is to clean it (the bike was stored in a barn for 5+ years).  Besides being dusty the lubricant on the chain and derailleurs had turned to glue.  A bit of de-greaser, old toothbrush and rag did the trick.  The chain was left to soak till next week.

Next, Jeff showed me how to change the shifter cables.  It wasn’t as difficult as I imagined.

With a nice clean machine and clean components the next steps are to true the wheels, put it back together and then tune it up.

I hope to have this project done by next Monday.  Then I’ll treat the o-so-helpful mechanics to a beer at the Rocket Market across the street.

Till later,
